HarrisonKornberg’s reinvigoration of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department main campus included relocating the Recreation and Wellness department.

The new department home is a converted metal building comprising twenty-one thousand square feet of warehouse and storage space. The building originally housed landscaping equipment, mechanical parts, document archives, three office spaces, a communal office pool and restroom facility. The challenge of renovating this space was bringing life to an otherwise cold exterior shell.

Thanks to a bold infusion of color, the new facility is vibrant and humane and a beacon among the parks facilities.

The sweeping canopy at the entry creates visual drama and signifies creative activity to pedestrians and personnel. Inside one finds multiple conference rooms, a multi-purpose space, additional storage and workspaces for more than thirty employees. The new building respects the industrial integrity of the original facility, maintaining an open floor plan. Metal storefront windows allow natural light into the space illuminating a myriad of colors throughout.
