Located at the edge of Houston’s bustling downtown, the Student Wellness and Success Center provides recreation and fitness facilities on UHD’s growing campus. The new center offers weight-training and cardio equipment, a three-court gymnasium with an elevated running track, a bouldering wall, and yoga/stretching/fitness spaces. The new building also provides open studying and socializing areas, collaborative spaces for lessons in health and wellness, and a demonstration kitchen for hands-on nutrition lessons.
Redefining the Student Experience of a Growing Urban Campus
This new facility serves as a catalyst for improving the quality of student life, facilitating an on-campus culture and changing the look of UHD’s campus to include open green spaces and striking views. The project’s site in the floodplain of Houston’s White Oak Bayou, provided challenges and inspired opportunities. With the first floor elevated nearly fourteen feet, the design utilized large expanses of glass and an outdoor terrace to maximize views of Houston’s downtown skyline.
The building’s entrance is oriented to the Bayou Trail, welcoming pedestrians from a key campus pathway and marking the facility as a campus hub for services. The three-story layout responds to surrounding academic buildings while maintaining space for future expansion.
